When Stopped by the Police
DO
- Be Respectful and polite
- Think carefully about your words and movements
- Remember that anything you say or do can be used against you
- Keep your hand where the police can see them
- Ask for a lawyer immediately upon your arrest
- Remember officers badge and patrol car numbers
- write down everything you remember right away
DON'T
- Get into an argument with the police
- Run
- Touch the police officer
- Resist arrest even if you believe you are innocent
- Complain on the scene or tell the police they're wrong or that you are going to file a complaint
- Make any statements regarding the incident
